The History of Italy
A country rich in culture and history, you will be hard pressed to find somebody who does not have even a slight bit of knowledge about Italy. Before even taking Italian language classes, one may possibly know the names of the structures left behind from the Roman Empire. Relatively young as in terms of the name and title of Italy, the history of Italy though is formulated by the ancient city of Rome or Roma in Italian and the influence of the Roman Empire that expanded throughout what we would now call Western Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and the North African coast. From the first century BC to the fifth century AD, the City of Rome controlled the region that we now call Italy. It was taken over by the Romans from the Etruscans and by 42 BC, the whole of Italy had come under Roman rule. The boundaries over the years with shift constantly due to small battles, but it remained a solid power. It was not until the Germanic tribes of the fifth century AD, where a weakened Rome, politically and physically, that the empire we know as Rome would fall to the barbarians. Taken over by German mercenaries and with the political centre of Rome as an Empire moving from Rome itself to what is now know as Constantinople, Italy itself goes through many phases much like the rest of Europe, leading to it finally becoming the political entity that we know as Italy in 1861.
